In the "Room of Names"...

After 3 years preparation and cancellation, they made it: 20 students met in Darmstadt, then headed to Austria in order to represent their school - and their country! - during the ceremonies marking the liberation of the concentration camp of Mauthausen,  77 years after (5 May 1945).

The Franco-German group practiced with Jean-Louis Roussel, Vice-President of the International Committee Mauhausen (top left) before singing the Chant des Marais -Moorsoldaten Lied- in French and German.

The group discovered the site of the camp a day before the ceremonies (the quarry and the terrifying 186 steps, left).

During the ceremonies, they were able to meet officials (Her Excellency, Ambassador of the UK in Austria, left), members of associations and other youngsters from all around Europe - except, sadly, Ukraine and Russia.

While visiting the camp, Manon & Eva found the name of the Résistant from Évreux Albert Madère who died from disease in Gusen in April 1945. They had met his daughter in March (see below).

The students met the daughter of a Résistant from Évreux. She was 2 when her father was arrested. He was deported to Mauthausen then Güsen, where he died in April 1945.
This encounter allowed the group to understand the links between history and memory and also between personnal history and a more general history.
